Named after her grandmother,
Fannie L. Polacca carries on more than just the name. Fannie
has followed in her grandmother's footsteps as a traditional
Hopi potter. Having watched her father, Tom Polacca, Fannie soon
developed her own style.
Today, Fannie's designs stem
from her traditional roots, and can be found on everything from
pottery, to contemporary tiles.
Fannie has been featured in
many books on Indian Art and Hopi Pottery, including Hopi-Tewa
Pottery by Gregory Schaaf, p. 129; Fourteen Families in Pueblo
Pottery by Rick Dillingham, pp. 14-15; and others.
This piece presents a series
of stylized birds and images unique to the Hopi, and the Sikyatki
revival period.
She has signed "Fannie
L. Polacca," and her clan symbol, Snow Clan - after her
mother Gertrude.
