Martha Appleleaf
San Ildefonso

Flute Neck Vase

13 1/2" H x 9 1/2" D

Born November 3, 1950, Martha Appleleaf is the daughter of Carmelita Dunlap (who was a niece of the famous Maria Martinez). She continues to do both black on black and the red pottery as well as polychrome and some more modern styles.

Martha has been an active potter since 1970. She and her son, Erik Fender, are both featured in Fourteen Families. She has taken 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons at Santa Fe Indian Market and Eight Northern.

This piece has the traditional pueblo feather motif together with water waves and other stylized rain clouds. Martha is especially proud of her black on black style which uses a more green colored slip for the matte.

She signs her work: Martha Appleleaf (with an apple)
