Michelle Shields (b. 1972)
is an accomplished Acoma Pueblo potter who handcrafts pots using
traditional materials and methods. She is the daughter of potter
Ethel Shields and sister of renowned potter Charmae Shields-Natseway.
Michelle created this historic
water jar in the traditional Acoma pottery colors of orange,
black and white. Constructed by hand from natural clay, the vessel
is covered in geometric and pictorial designs painted freehand,
including bird, flower, and rain patterns.
This unique piece brings the
traditions of Acoma Pueblo pottery to life in a modern creation
