Stetson Honyumptewa
Twin War God
12 1/2"
total height
We are thrilled to present
a great example by one of the most well known and award winning
Hopi kachina carvers of all time.
This particular piece bears
a striking resemblance to the larger Twin War God Stetson sold
at Santa Fe's Indian Market in 2012 where he also won Best of
Show!
This kachina represents one
of the twin warrior gods - Pookanghoya. "He often
appears in the Mixed Kachina Dances but may also appear in evening
dances in the kivas. His is one of the so-called Fighting Kachinas."
- Barton Wright, Kachinas: A Hopi
Artist's Documentary (138).
The stripes on his face and
headdress are warrior tracks.
Stetson Honyumptewa is recognized
as one of the leading contemporary kachina carvers. Subsequently
his work is highly sought-after and can be hard to find under
five figures.
He is known for his incredible
detail and attention to proportionate anatomy. He has paved the
way for many carvers in the younger generation, including his
nephew Ronald Honyumptewa.
Now living in Santa Fe, Stetson
continues to practice the traditional art of Hopi kachina carving
and makes regular trips back home where he participates in the
ceremonies with relatives and other peers such as Loren Phillips,
and others.
