Frances Sam
Paiute
Beaded Basket
c. 1972
7 1/2"
H x 7 1/2" D
This unique collector's item
was created by Paiute basket weaver, Frances Sam in 1972. It
was entered in the then prestigious Gallup Inter-tribal Indian
Ceremonial, where it took First Prize.
The ribbon of course accompanies
the piece.
Paiutes are well known for
their basketry, but the beaded applique was a serious innovation
at this time. As an emerging artist, Frances Sam was taking Southwestern
basket weaving to another level.
Not only does it have a super-tight
weave, but this basket is one of the few lidded vessels made
in this region.
If you're looking for a true
one-of-a-kind accent to your Southwest Indian collection, or
basket collection, this is your piece.
